Social-Emotional Learning

Let's Get Regulated

Let's Get Regulated

When considering social-emotional learning as it relates to the whole child, and the tools needed to navigate that learning, the self is at the center of the conversation.

The self responds to stimuli in the environment through emotions. Emotions effectively frame behavior and that behavior is how your child will build meaningful, lasting relationships with themselves and the people in their life.

Self-expression and self-regulation are foundational to social-emotional learning. These functions include skills that we will address with your child such as identifying, naming, and understanding emotions, connecting emotions, feelings, and thoughts to behavior, confidence, self-reflection, impulse control, self-motivation, regulating behaviors and emotions, frustration tolerance, and problem-solving.

Social awareness is how the self effectively navigates the social world, and relationship skills are how the self effectively engages with it. Social awareness includes demonstrating empathy towards others, eye contact, recognizing familiar peers and adults, understanding social norms and cues, and seeing things from different points of view. The relationship skills we will work with your child to improve include, but are not limited to, conflict resolution, advocacy and asking for help, cooperation, conversational skills, and establishing and maintaining positive relationships.

All of this comes together to inform your child's decision-making and the critical thinking skills associated with it. We will work with your child to understand the consequences related to behaviors and consider others and the social context when making decisions.
